Cholecystitis Diet

Cholecystitis is the term used to describe inflammation and swelling of the gall bladder. The most common reason for the occurrence of cholecystitis is obstruction of the duct of the gallbladder, the cystic duct. This obstruction causes bile to concentrate in the gall bladder and thus increasing the pressure there. This causes pain in the upper right abdominal area sometimes. This increased pressure and concentrated bile can be sometimes associated with bacterial infections, together causing irritation to the gall bladder and resulting in swelling and pain.

If you are suffering from cholecystitis, then you need to follow a particular diet to avoid any discomfort. Here are some tips which you need to remember while choosing your diet in cholecystitis:

  • Strictly avoid fried foods and meats with high amounts of fat. This diet will prevent the formation of gallstones. Reducing fats in diet will also help in relieving the symptoms of cholecystitis. Some foods which should be avoided including dairy products, eggs, nuts, red meat, carbonated drinks, coffee, black tea, cabbage, cauliflower, fried foods and chocolates. If you cannot avoid meat, then prefer lean and skinless meat.
  • Apart from following this diet, make sure you avoid drinking too much of alcohol. Consumption of greater amount of alcohol increases the chances of gall bladder stones and cholecystitis.
  • Eating too much in a single meal or skipping meals can exert pressure on the gall bladder. So do not skip meals and avoid overeating in a single meal. Especially breakfast should never be skipped as it is the most important meal of the day.

In case of cholecystitis, there is inadequate release of bile in the digestive tract. So, any fat containing foods will be difficult for the body to digest. The treatment for mild cholecystitis is following proper diet, consumption of more fluids, providing rest to bowel, and administration of intravenous antibiotics, if complicated by antibiotics.
