Dull Pain in Lower Left Abdomen

A very common site of pain is in the lower left abdomen. This is common between men and women. The organs involved in the line of pain, are parts of the large intestine, the sigmoid colon and the descending colon, the left ovary and the left ureter. The lower left abdominal pain can be both acute and chronic. The pain can be described as a dull aching pain or a sharp stabbing pain. However the pain arising can be intermittent, regular or continuous. Along with this the person can suffer from nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite. Though, some of the symptoms may not be that serious, at times immediate treatment is needed.

The pain may radiate to the left and the back and could also reach the groin. The pain usually comes in waves. Other symptoms could be nausea, vomiting, red, pink or brown urine, foul smelling and frequent urination. Drinking lots of water and taking medication may help in lessening the pain. However if the pain persists or becomes severe then one may have to go in for surgery where the stones will be removed.

Left Ovarian Cyst

An ovarian cyst is a sac filled with a fluid that may grow large and cause low abdominal pain. It causes quite a bit of discomfort and pain but is usually harmless. The pain may be continuous or intermittent. Other symptoms could be nausea, vomiting, menstrual change and pressure on the bladder and the rectum. Most cysts go away without any surgery.


History of Lower left abdominal pain

  • If there is colicky or waves of pain it suggests obstruction in the intestine, renal or biliary colic.
  • If the pain is tearing it could indicate a rupture.
  • Constant sharp pain which worsens because of movement or coughing could mean peritonitis.
  • A constant dull pain followed by inflammation could mean diverticulitis.
  • If the pattern changes over a period of time then it could mean early appendicitis.

Other causes of dull pain in lower left abdomen

We had discussed in detail about the causes of lower left abdominal pain but there are still other causes which we need to look into. They are as follows:

Food poisoning: This is very common during the summer months when food begins to get spoilt faster than normal. Consumption of such food can cause food poisoning. This is due to the bacteria, virus or parasite present in the food. It is not a cause for alarm

Viral Gastroenteritis: This is commonly called as stomach flu and is caused by different types of viruses. This does not last for more than two or three days.

Painful Menstrual Periods; pain, cramping and discomfort occurs during the period of menstruation. Pain is also felt in the abdomen and there could be a feeling of tenderness in the abdominal area.

Urinary Tract Infection: This is caused by bacteria and occurs anywhere in the urinary tract. In this also pain in the lower abdomen is felt.


This could vary depending on the cause. However treatments can range from medication for inflammation to giving antibiotics in cases of infection. Certain restrictions can be made in certain food and beverages not suiting the person. In most cases a few days in the hospital should help but should things may go worse, then surgery could be recommended like in the cases of kidney stone. Anti inflammatory drugs can be used but in limited use. This could also cause gastrointestinal disturbances. An antacid give immediate relief but is temporary. Always consult your doctor in lower abdominal pain. Do not take it lightly.
